CANJ Launches “Casinos United Against Hunger” Campaign

In an effort to address food insecurity in New Jersey, the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) has launched the Casinos United Against Hunger campaign in partnership with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ). Atlantic City casinos collectively are donating more than $170,000 to support CFBNJ’s mission.

“Ending hunger will take all of us stepping up to do more for our neighbors. Atlantic City casinos are coming together to form Casinos United Against Hunger, a new campaign dedicated to strengthening our efforts to combat food insecurity in New Jersey. By supporting important organizations like the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, we will help address hunger by providing meals to families throughout the state,” said Mark Giannantonio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey.

The donation was presented at CFBNJ’s Night of 300,000 Meals on May 1, 2025, a culinary event that brings together local chefs, restaurants and community members to help provide 300,000 meals for neighbors in need. Chefs from Atlantic City casinos participated in the annual event.

“Atlantic County has some of the highest rates of food insecurity in the state. We’re grateful to the Casino Association of New Jersey for helping to honor the FoodBank’s 50th anniversary with their generous support and for uniting the Atlantic City casino community to help address hunger. Through this partnership, we can provide more meals to local families in need and make a lasting impact in the area,” said Elizabeth McCarthy, president & CEO of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

In addition to the CFBNJ’s 50th anniversary, the partnership between the CANJ and CFBNJ comes at an especially crucial time given the level of food insecurity in New Jersey. Nearly 1 million people in the state, including more than 260,000 children, are at risk of hunger. Atlantic County, home to Atlantic City’s casinos, has some of the highest rates of food insecurity in the state, with 12.2% of residents and 17.4% of children affected.

The casinos involved in the Casinos United Against Hunger initiative – Bally’s Atlantic City Casino Resort, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Caesars Entertainment’s Atlantic City Resorts, Golden Nugget Atlantic City, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, Ocean Casino Resort and Resorts Casino Hotel – are joining a long-standing tradition of support for CFBNJ. Many properties in Atlantic City are longtime supporters of CFBNJ, and this collective effort demonstrates their commitment to addressing this critical issue. Through this partnership, CFBNJ will be able to distribute more meals to families in need, especially in areas that are most impacted. The $170,000 donation is a total of all financial, grant and in-kind contributions from each Atlantic City casino to the CFBNJ this year.

The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) issued the following statement regarding the announcement that the Atlantic City Airshow will be returning this summer:

“The Casino Association of New Jersey is thrilled to hear that the Atlantic City Airshow will be returning this summer. The airshow has always been a highlight during the summer season, and we look forward to celebrating this renowned event in July.

“Along with world-class gaming, exciting concerts, a replenished beach, delicious food, and an all-star lineup of entertainment options, Atlantic City is the place to be this summer.

“We want to thank New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, CRDA Executive Director Eric Scheffler and Visit Atlantic City President and CEO Gary Musich for their efforts to bring the airshow back.”

Atlantic City Casinos Help Raise $280,000 at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Walk on the Atlantic City Boardwalk

The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) has participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s “Out of the Darkness Community Walk,” on Saturday, September 7, which raised more than $280,000. Led by team members from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, employees from every casino property participated in Saturday’s walk.

“We are so very proud that every Atlantic City casino property has united with Hard Rock to raise awareness and funding for this important cause. We are extremely grateful that our efforts will help to make a difference in the lives of many and aid the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s with life-saving initiatives,” said Mike Sampson, General Manager at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City & AFSP NJ Chapter Board Member.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was the first Atlantic City casino to participate in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk over the last five years through Sampson’s leadership. The team at Hard Rock was driven to participate annually after the group’s personal experiences with loved ones who died by suicide.

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the US. In 2022, nearly 50,000 Americans died by suicide. In New Jersey, suicide is impacting the state’s youngest residents. According to the most recent CDC data, 94 youth ages 10 to 24 died by suicide in 2021, making it the second leading cause of death among youth in that age range for the state. The National Institute of Health reports 20% of children ages 3 to 17 have either a mental or a behavioral disorder. Between 2008 and 2020, suicide rates for children ages 12 to 17 increased by 16%, according to the institute.

“This show of force from across our casino properties demonstrates the industry’s commitment to this vital issue. Sadly, so many families across our city, state and country know a loved one that has died by suicide, and that is why it’s so important for us to come together to raise awareness and support each other,” said Mark Giannantonio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, including those who have experienced a loss. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health through public education and community programs, develops suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provides support for those affected by suicide.

“We are honored and grateful for the continued partnership with Hard Rock in the fight to prevent suicide and reduce the stigma around mental health. With their support, the Atlantic-Cape Walk has grown to be the Chapter’s largest walk, raising $7000 in 2017 to over $278,000 last year. Through Hard Rock’s leadership we have been able to engage the communities of Atlantic and Cape Counties to raise awareness, bring comfort to those who have lost someone to suicide and to raise critical funds for suicide prevention,” said Michael Lamma, AFSP Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer.

Atlantic City Casinos Announce Continued Support of Problem Gambling Awareness Month

The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) issued the following statement to express their continued support and efforts to prioritize and raise awareness for problem gambling during Problem Gambling Awareness Month throughout the month of March:

“The Atlantic City casino industry is proud to continue supporting and prioritizing the efforts to raise awareness of problem gambling. We thank New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Casino Control Commission Chairman James T. Plousis, along with the Commissioners, for their leadership and collaboration reaffirming the month of March as ‘Problem Gambling Awareness Month’ in New Jersey.

The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) supports a wide variety of efforts to raise awareness and prevention around problem gambling, including:

  • CANJ supports the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey and promotes the 800-GAMBLER hotline with a mutual goal of increasing public awareness of problem gambling, along with echoing the availability of prevention, treatment, and recovery services;
  • We are committed to ensuring industry employees understand the signs of problem gambling through training and education programs, and most importantly, that they are familiar with the resources available for help;
  • We are focused on raising awareness across the broader community by sharing information on how to locate resources to obtain help for disordered gamblers through signage, rack cards, pamphlets, and employee interactions;
  • We also offer educational and awareness information and tools such as the state’s self-exclusion program that the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement administers;
  • We administer our own responsible gaming programs which impose certain additional restrictions and/or cooling off periods for those exhibiting signs of problem gambling; and
  • We ensure that our advertising and marketing efforts align with our commitment to responsible gambling.

The casino industry sincerely values and appreciates our relationship with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey and will continue to promote action and intention not only throughout this month, but the entire year.”
