YGAM’s Student Hub website receives NUS endorsement as universities return
The National Union of Students (NUS) which represents 7 million individuals engaged in higher and further education has welcomed the launch of YGAM’s new Student Hub website which has been developed to raise awareness of the risk of students experiencing gaming and gambling-related harm while at university/college. The NUS described the YGAM initiative as ‘vital for students and crucial in helping to provide advice on how to make the most of university life while avoiding the risks.’
Created with input from current students, the website features bespoke advice and guidance to help students make the most out of university while avoiding the risks of gaming and gambling-related harm. It features interactive elements along with lived-experience case studies to further highlight the real issues of gambling and gaming harms on university campuses.
Pete Woodward, Head of Delivery for University and Student Engagement at YGAM, said: “Research commissioned by YGAM and undertaken by Red Brick Research found that 264,000 students are at some risk of gambling-related harm in the UK, while around 88,000 may already be problem gamblers. Student life has changed dramatically this year due to Covid-19, and this could have a detrimental impact on student wellbeing and increase the risks associated with gaming and gambling at university. Our Student Hub is the first of its kind; supporting students to enjoy a university experience free from gaming and gambling-related harm. We will use this online portal to gather insights and share findings with our partners at other universities and students’ unions.”
He added: “Research published by The Lancet in July suggests that the mental health of young people aged 18-24 has deteriorated this year, likely due to the ongoing pandemic. This is a concerning development, as YGAM’s research on the topic suggests that students often turn to gambling and gaming when they are depressed, as a desire to feel more ‘in control’ of their day-to-day activities. One third of students said their gambling habits have had a negative effect on their wellbeing.”
Karen Rowlingson, Professor of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham said: “Students are under huge pressures, more so than ever this year. Gambling and gaming problems can sometimes be a consequence of those pressures and sometimes a further cause. YGAM’s new student hub provides an incredibly important resource to help students avoid the risks of gaming and gambling-related harm at this time.”
To support the Student Hub and its additional university projects, YGAM has also announced the appointment of part-time student positions to drive their programme and to ensure the voice of students is consistently used in their work. YGAM will also be training staff at 25 different universities across the UK, enabling an unprecedented number of young people to benefit from the additional safeguarding this will allow. The Student Hub will sit alongside other tools such as GAMSTOP the free, independent, self-exclusion tool which enables people to exclude from all UK-based online gambling operators for a period of six months, twelve months, or five years.

New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Adopts Sports Betting Policy
The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (SACB) announced that it has recently adopted an updated sports betting policy for all licensees, officials, and employees.
Effective immediately, the policy prohibits unethical betting practices and reinforces the commitment to maintaining fairness and public trust in combative sports, including boxing, wrestling, extreme wrestling, kick boxing, and combative sports exhibitions, events, performances, and contests.
“With this action, we are safeguarding the integrity of combative sports events. By implementing these standards, we are sending a clear message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated in New Jersey’s combative sports industry,” said SACB Commissioner Larry Hazzard Sr.
The policy applies to board officials, such as inspectors, timekeepers, judges, referees, and physicians; board members, including the chairman; and board employees, such as the commissioner and deputy commissioner. Promoters, participants, and their agents are also encouraged to adopt integrity policies in line with these standards.
Key policy provisions include those related to betting restrictions, prohibited conduct, training, and enforcement, among others:
• Officials, members, and employees are prohibited from betting on any combative sports event, both within New Jersey and globally. Legal betting on non-combative sports is allowed, provided it complies with local laws. Board employees must register with the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) before placing such bets in New Jersey.
• All forms of illegal betting, including through unauthorized platforms, are strictly prohibited.
• Prohibited conduct includes match fixing and acting on or spreading insider information.
• Board personnel are prohibited from working for sportsbooks or their affiliates.
• Promoters and participants, along with their agents and managers, must refrain from betting on combative sports events held in New Jersey or engaging in any actions that compromise the integrity of performances.
• All stakeholders, including board officials, members, employees, promotors, participants, agents, managers and seconds, are obligated to report any violations of this policy to the SACB Commissioner immediately.
• Board personnel are required to undergo training and acknowledge this policy.
• Violations may result in disciplinary actions, including fines, license suspensions, or revocation.

LiveScore and Dimitar Berbatov Ask Fans to Take “Extra Added Time” for Their Mental Health
LiveScore and former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov have teamed up to encourage fans to take “Extra Added Time” for their mental health. As part of the campaign, LiveScore will donate £250 for every key Premier League moment delivered via its app post-90 minutes throughout November.
“Extra Added Time” comes as added time across all major leagues significantly increases. During the 2023/24 season, Premier League matches saw an additional 38% of play, pushing the average match duration to 101 minutes and 42 seconds.
As fans anxiously watch the clock tick beyond 90 minutes, waiting for a dramatic last-minute goal, or even a red card, LiveScore turns those added time moments into support for the mental wellbeing of the football community.
In addition to a total of £10,000 donated to a leading mental health charity, Bloomsbury Football – an organisation that harnesses the power of football to transform the lives of young people across London – will also benefit from the initiative, receiving £3000 to support its mental health coaching programme.
Spearheading the campaign is Dimitar Berbatov, who scored an equalising penalty for Tottenham as they went on to win the 2008 League Cup Final in extra time. The former Manchester United and Premier League icon is leading the call out for fans to take additional time to focus on their mental health.
The extension of added time in the Premier League has led to a significant surge in goals scored after the 90th minute, rising by over 110% from 49 goals in the 2022/23 season to 103 in 2023/24.
Fans can track the progress of the campaign directly through the LiveScore app, ensuring they can engage with the cause while keeping up with the game’s critical moments.
Extra Added Time ambassador and former Manchester United footballer, Dimitar Berbatov said: “Football has a special power to bring joy to the world, and nothing brings people together like last minute goals.
“That’s why I’m delighted to join LiveScore for Extra Added Time, where the charity donation for every moment in added time will make a big difference, and hopefully, together, we will encourage people to spend more time on their mental health.”
LiveScore CEO Sam Sadi commented: “For over 25 years, LiveScore has been delivering every moment to fans. We are delighted to see this campaign translate these moments into an important donation to charity, as we look to use the power of the sport to support the mental wellbeing of the whole football community.”
