The PGA of America is partnering with the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Have A Game Plan.® Bet Responsibly.™ public service campaign to promote responsible sports wagering.

Announced ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship—May 16-19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY—the partnership will feature co-branded responsible gaming content, educational materials and strategic activations across PGA of America’s digital and social platforms.

“As the PGA of America welcomes ESPN BET as the Official Sports Betting Sponsor of the 106th PGA Championship, it is core to our values to ensure golf fans have the right tools in their bag to bet responsibly,” said PGA of America Chief Commercial Officer Jeff Price. “Activating AGA’s Have A Game Plan campaign during this year’s PGA Championship and beyond will be an integral part of our strategy as interest in golf wagering grows.”

Launched in 2019, Have A Game Plan brings legal gaming operators, sports teams, leagues, media companies and other organizations together around a common consumer education message, focusing on the core principles of responsible wagering:

  • Set a budget and stick to it.
  • Keep it social—sports betting is a form of entertainment for adults.
  • Know the odds.
  • Play with legal, regulated operators.

“We look forward to our partnership with the PGA of America amplifying Have A Game Plan’s principles with golf enthusiasts and bettors across the country,” said AGA Senior Vice President of Strategic Communications Joe Maloney. “Together, we’re driving the message home: set a budget, stick to it, and wager responsibly.”

Other league Have A Game Plan partners include the MLB, NASCAR, NBA, PGA TOUR, NHL and WNBA. For more information about the Have A Game Plan initiative and resources on responsible gambling, visit HaveAGamePlan.org.

DeWine Proposes Significantly Raising Gaming Tax to Help Fund Ohio Sports Stadiums

Gov. Mike DeWine is proposing to increase Ohio’s sports gaming tax to help pay for major and minor league stadium projects and youth sports programs.

The governor announced the proposal during his press conference on the new budget Monday. The governor’s proposal would raise the tax from 20% to 40%. The governor said the increase would raise up $180 million more per year. The money could be used for professional sports stadium projects and youth sports.

Dave Jenkins, COO of the Haslam Sports Group, released the following statement to the FOX 8 I-TEAM Monday night:

“We appreciate Gov. DeWine’s commitment to looking at creative ways to solve sports facilities development while positively impacting youth sports throughout Ohio. We look forward to learning more about the options this legislation may provide. At the same time, we continue to work with the appropriate stakeholders and other experienced experts to develop alternative funding mechanisms for an enclosed Huntington Bank Field in Brook Park, knowing the importance of not tapping into existing taxpayer funds that go to other pressing community needs. The model we’ve proposed on the state level would leverage only the incremental tax revenues from within the development itself to enable the project. The Brook Park Huntington Bank Field project is more than just a stadium. Combined with the adjacent mixed-use development, which would be enabled by approximately $2B in private investments, this $3B+ economic development project would be among the largest ever in Northeast Ohio. It truly is a generational opportunity to create a robust, revenue-generating district that will bring in new jobs and new visitors to our region and significantly impact our economy.”

The Cleveland Browns plan to build an enclosed stadium with development around it in Brook Park.

“Whole heart of this team”: Browns fans react to Myles Garrett trade request

Meantime, the city of Cleveland is enforcing the so-called Modell Law restricting sports teams from moving. The city has filed a lawsuit in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court hoping to keep the Browns playing on the lakefront.

Under the Modell Law, if a pro sports team wants to move, the city must, first, have a chance to find new owners. The Browns, though, are fighting that in federal court asking a judge to rule that law unconstitutional.

The Greens have offered the Albanese Government a pragmatic pathway to tackle the harms of gambling advertising with new laws this fortnight.

The Greens have released a letter sent to Communications Minister Michelle Rowland last week in which the party offered Labour a compromise: to ban gambling ads online, ban ads before and after sport and during kids viewing times, and to create a cap of 2 ads per television programme, mirroring the Government’s earlier position.

Greens Communications Spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said:

“Gambling ad reform is the unfinished business of this parliament. The public want this done before the election and the Government should listen and act.

“We’re offering a pragmatic pathway here and there is just enough time to get it done. On Wednesday, the Senate will debate and vote on the Greens’ bill to ban gambling ads. All sides should back it.

“We will support legislation this week to ban gambling ads online and implement some broadcast restrictions before and after sport and during kids viewing times.

“This offer is consistent with the Albanese Government’s previous promises.

“If the Government is serious about preventing gambling harm and protecting our kids they will jump at this offer.

“Australians want gambling ads banned and stakeholders are desperate for action.

“The Albanese Government shouldn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. The Greens have compromised and Labor should too.

“The Greens will push for a full gambling ad ban in the next parliament but in the meantime we should work together for the sake of our kids and communities.

“Australians lose more to gambling than any other nation than earth and we need our politicians to act.”
