BCLC, Loto-Quebec and Atlantic Lottery Corporation Launch Singles Betting on Day 1 of Legalisation in Canada Via Scientific Games’ OpenSports™ Platform

New legislation sees OpenSports become the first regulated sportsbook solution to offer single-game betting

Scientific Games Corporation has strengthened its position in North America by becoming the first regulated sportsbook platform provider to offer singles betting in Canada.

The regulated Canadian market embraced singles betting on August 27 and Scientific Games went live with its offering from day one, with the OpenSports product suite powering the sportsbooks of British Columbia Lottery Corporation (“BCLC”), Loto-Quebec and Atlantic Lottery Corporation.

Previously, bettors in Canada have only been able to bet on parlays within the regulated market. However, thanks to the legalization of singles, OpenSports can now deliver the full sports betting experience in line with other regulated territories worldwide.

The introduction of singles makes live betting even more exciting for Canadians and reduces the barrier to entry for recreational players, while also allowing money to be returned to bettors faster.

Charlene Nielson, Director of Product Management at BCLC said: “We are pleased to extend our relationship with Scientific Games and to expand our sportsbook offering with its singles offering. We look forward to continuing to work with Scientific Games as we innovate and evolve our business.”

Louis Beaudet, Director, Sports and Entertainment Betting at Loto-Quebec said: “To be able to offer singles betting to our customers on day one of the new legislation being implemented was very important to Loto-Quebec. Offering these bets using Scientific Games’ OpenSports platform makes this even more special, such is the longstanding relationship we have had and we are excited to bring yet more sports betting options to our players.”

Scott Eagles, Manager of Sports Betting at Atlantic Lottery Corporation said: “We’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time.  We’re beyond excited to be offering our players a safe and regulated alternative to place single-event sports wagers. To be able to do this using the OpenSports platform is very special as we’ve built a strong relationship with Scientific Games and we are ready to bring the most immersive and user friendly sports betting experiences to our players.”

Marc Crean, Commercial Director, Digital at Scientific Games said: “The ability to offer singles betting to players from the very first day of its availability in Canada illustrates the speed in which we can adapt to regulatory changes. As the first to market, we are now well-positioned to enjoy further growth in Canada and provide our key customers BCLC, Loto-Quebec and Atlantic Lottery Corporation with a world-class sports betting experience.”

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) has announced the appointment of Dallas McCready as the new head of the crown corporation, replacing Patrick Daigle, who had announced his retirement.

Before taking on his new role, McCready was Atlantic Lottery’s Chief Strategy Officer, a job he took in 2022. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the gaming industry and public sector, including serving as a Deputy Minister with the Government of New Brunswick. As ALC’s Chief Strategy Officer he led the development of the organization’s recent five-year strategic plan.

“McCready brings significant gaming experience and a unique set of skills and experiences that will drive the organization forward at a very exciting time in the industry. The fact that we were able to identify the ideal next President and CEO from the internal executive ranks speaks to the strength and depth of the team at Atlantic Lottery,” said Sean O’Connor, Chair of Atlantic Lottery’s Board of Directors.

An ad-hoc board committee was put together to partner with Royer Thompson, an executive recruitment firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to lead a search for Daigle’s replacement. More than 120 applicants were considered for the role in an international search.

“Atlantic Lottery has always punched above its weight. With increasing competition in the sector, we are emerging as a leader in healthy play for our customers while continuing to make a game-changing impact for the people and places of Atlantic Canada,” McCready said in a statement.

According to the latest annual report for the 2023-24 fiscal year, released last October, Atlantic Lottery delivered CA$487 million to the four Atlantic provinces – New Brunswick (CA$151.2 million), Nova Scotia (CA$161.7 million), Prince Edward Island (CA$26.8 million), and Newfoundland and Labrador (CA$147.3 million) – which included CA$256.5 million from the Destination line of business (video lottery terminals) and CA$230.5 million from the Retail and iLottery lines of business.

Atlantic Lottery continued to see growth on the alc.ca platform, with gross gaming revenue for the iLottery line of business increasing by 17% over the previous fiscal year.

New Pan-Canadian Coalition of Provincial Gaming Corporations Calls for Interjurisdictional Cooperation to Tackle Illegal Online Gambling

Published

on

A coalition of five provincial gaming corporations in Canada is calling on the federal government to continue to work with the provinces and regulators to protect Canadians from the misleading advertising and operation of illegal gambling websites within Canada.

The coalition comprised British Columbia Lottery Corporation; Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis; Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation; Loto-Québec; and Atlantic Lottery Corporation (collectively, the Provincial Lottery Corporations).

In all provinces where coalition members operate, offshore operators promote their illegal gambling websites by advertising mirror “free-to-play” websites in all forms of media and, in particular, during popular live sporting events. These advertisements broadcast nationally, and blur the line between provincially regulated gaming sites, on the one hand, and illegal operators, on the other.

“Research shows that the majority of players are unaware of whether an online site is legal in their province or not. This is a significant amount of money that could be staying right here in our region to fund public services, but instead continues to be taken away from helping our communities to the sole benefit of illegal operators,” said Atlantic Lottery Corporation President and CEO, Patrick Daigle.

In response to the significant concern expressed by Canadians over the rapid increase and frequency of these advertisements, the Provincial Lottery Corporations have come together to fight back against these illegal operators and their misleading, intrusive advertising.

Part of the coalition’s advocacy will work to raise public awareness about the prevalence of illegal operators and advise media platform owners of their duty to comply with existing laws and regulations by refusing to accept misleading advertisements for illegal gambling websites. The coalition also encourages the federal government to enforce current laws and regulations to shut out these operators from the markets where the Provincial Lottery Corporations operate.

According to June 2022 research conducted by H2 Gambling Capital, the Canadian online gambling market is valued at $3.8 billion in 2022 and is estimated to grow to $6.2 billion by 2026.

“Illegal operators see the Canadian landscape on a whole as ripe for the taking. They are using misleading advertising to dominate the market, offering countless opportunities for Canadians to – often unknowingly – engage in illegal betting,” said Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, CEO, Kandice Machado.

Commercial gambling is illegal in Canada unless controlled by the various provincial governments. Provincial oversight helps protect players by offering controlled and safe environments to play, protection from predatory practices, age-gating, safe play resources to support healthy play, and accountability to the public. Offshore illegal gambling websites are not regulated or authorized by provincial jurisdictions.

“The members of our coalition return their profits back to the province in which they operate. These profits help fund important programs and services like healthcare, education, and community programs. Illegal gambling websites advertise to Canadian players but often operate outside of Canada, taking the profits with them,” said Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corporation, President & CEO, Manny Atwal.
