Money and Mental Health Launches New Three-year Programme to Help Banks Tackle Gambling Harms
The Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, the charity founded and chaired by Martin Lewis, has launched the Gambling Harms Action Lab — a three-year programme working with current account providers to develop and implement new tools to address gambling related harm.
Nationwide is the first financial services firm to sign up to the programme, signalling the organisation’s support for a collaborative approach to addressing gambling harms
The programme, funded from a regulatory settlement approved by the Gambling Commission, will bring together a group of five to seven financial services firms for an 18-month period, to explore and address common challenges to improving support for people experiencing gambling harm.
This will include a focus on how improving support and outcomes for customers experiencing gambling harms can help banks meet their requirements under the Financial Conduct Authority’s Consumer Duty, which came into effect in 2023.
The Duty requires firms to take a more consumer-centred approach to banking. Money and Mental Health’s programme will support firms to develop and test new tools and interventions aimed at improving outcomes, with direct input from the charity’s Research Community of people with experience of mental health problems and gambling harms.
Nationwide has become the first financial services firm to join the Gambling Harms Action Lab programme, signalling its commitment to progress and improve its offering for tackling gambling harms and work alongside other banks in the sector to tackle this ongoing challenge.
The Money and Mental Health Policy Institute has also released new research, looking at gambling harms in Britain and the role of current account providers to support the launch of the new programme of work.
Shining a light: Exploring the role of financial services in tackling gambling harms finds that there is a huge gap between the number of people in need of support for gambling harms and the number of people regularly accessing these services.
The report also found that under the Consumer Duty framework, there is more action that current account providers can and should be taking to address gambling harms. The Gambling Harms Action Lab will support innovation and the roll out of new interventions to ensure firms are meeting their obligations under this new framework.
Helen Undy, chief executive of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, said: “Gambling problems can cause catastrophic harms for those affected by them. Financial services are in a unique position to help, and it’s been great to see the progress made in recent years — particularly with the introductions of gambling blocking tools, which almost every current account provider now offers.
“But there is still a lot more to be done. We want to work with banks and other financial services to share ideas, overcome the challenges that might exist to improve support for customers, and to spread best practice across the sector. The Gambling Harms Action Lab is an important opportunity for firms to help drive that progress, no matter how advanced they are or otherwise in this work.
“We’re delighted that Nationwide have come on board with the programme, and we’re urging more firms to get involved so that we can continue the momentum in tackling gambling harms that we’ve seen in recent years.”

A Decade in iGaming: From Newcomer to a CMO
Wow, time flies! Can’t believe it’s been ten years since stepping into the exhilarating world of online gambling – a field that initially seemed like a short-term stint quickly turned into a new-found passion.
Moving to Malta, and eventually finding a home in Tallinn, I’ve had the privilege to watch the highs and lows as well as the many progressions and transformations. Today, I am proud to form part of the Mr. Gamble team that is ambitiously expanding into new markets, and pushing the boundaries.
From Customer Support to CMO
My journey in iGaming kicked off in Customer Support at Betsson – a leap from my telecom sales management role back in Finland. While this move puzzled my family and friends alike, it was a necessary step. Over the months and years, I worked my way up through various roles including Affiliate Coordinator, Affiliate Manager and Head of Affiliates, learning the various intricate parts of the industry, while at the same time adapting to new technological changes.
One thing is for sure, the iGaming industry is a fast-paced one, and each role has helped me to thrive and adapt to the various changes. Flexibility is key when working in this industry.
Venturing into Entrepreneurship: My Own Affiliate Business
Following many years of corporate experience, I took the leap to start up my own affiliate business with the aim of creating my own business from scratch. Handling everything from SEO and content strategy to fostering brand partnerships and growth strategies gave me an overall view of the affiliate industry’s many complexities. This entrepreneurial journey instilled insight and resilience, especially in terms of the value of the diverse skill sets found within a team.
By 2023, I joined Mr. Gamble as CMO, bringing my own entrepreneurial experience into this company’s growth strategy. Drawing on my background in SEO, content management and brand development and alongside a knowledgeable team, we have successfully strengthened Mr. Gamble’s presence in established markets, while also setting our sites on new markets.
New Markets and New Possibilities
Since the online gambling industry is continually evolving and expanding, it also brings with it a surge in growth when it comes to new and emerging markets. While we have made huge strides in launching Mr. Gambe USA, we are also eyeing promising regions in Asia, Latin America and Africa, where digital adoption and regulations are evolving creating new opportunities.
As we continue to solidify our presence in the US, these emerging markets represent the next frontier.
An Ever-Changing and Evolving Gambling Industry
Over the past decade, the online gambling industry has quickly evolved from a somewhat fragmented field to a high-powered professional space. Conferences and expos, once informal gatherings have become hubs for talent.
Events such as SiGMA, SBC, iGB, NEXT.io and Hiphter Events today celebrate the progression of iGaming, while highlighting the various advances in technology and market inclusivity.
The shift toward hybrid work in recent years has also paved the way for industry shakeups. While digital operations are convenient, the importance of face-to-face meetings and connections remains. In an industry highly reliant and built on personal relationships, meeting in person strengthens partnerships and opens doors to new opportunities.
A Bright Future for Mr. Gamble
As CMO of Mr. Gamble, I along with the team are committed to expanding our brand’s influence, not only in traditional markets, but also in new and emerging ones. iGaming is constantly evolving and our strategies must evolve too, adapting and driving on the windy road to success. This entails adapting to changes in technology, user behaviour and experience, and most importantly navigating regulatory landscapes.
Of course, Google’s frequent algorithm updates keep us our our toes, pushing us to refine our approach to stay competitive and ever more relent.
Reflecting on the last 10 years, I am energised and optimistic for the future. With a talented team and untapped markets in tow, Mr. Gamble is well-prepared for substantial growth and impact. Here is to the journey ahead and to everyone – mentors, peers, and friends who have been part of this rewarding path. My name is Margarita, and I am the Director of the Betmen Affiliates program. We launched 1.5 years ago with just 10 active partners. An affiliate manager worth his or her salt must be able to sell the product and influence affiliates to promote it at our offered rate, promote our many payment options, and talk about conversions.
From Affiliate Managers to Team Leads
By the time we needed a team lead, we had formed a close-knit team. Even though I interviewed several candidates for the position, hiring externally did not feel right. The ideal person for the role needed to have strong managerial skills as well as be able to connect with myself and my team. Michael and Alex both recommended each other for the role. I now have a unique team that can deliver amazing results: in just a year and a half, we’ve increased the number of FTDs by 70 times and are steadily moving towards 80,000 monthly deposits.
