As 2023 draws to a close, Jamul Casino reported that its team member-led Community Champions initiative along with the Jamul Indian Village of California (JIV) Tribe has made philanthropic donations this year totaling approximately a quarter of a million dollars. These donations are part of the Tribe and Casino’s ongoing commitment to give back to the San Diego community and the local organizations that are making a difference in people’s lives.

Jamul Casino’s Community Champions program was initiated by President and General Manager, Mary Cheeks. She states, “Community Champions is a great way for the Casino to come alongside our team members, encourage their participation in community service, and invest in the causes important to them.” Cheeks adds, “It’s been a thrill to see this initiative really take off and become such a force for good in the community.”

2023 Philanthropic Highlights

NAMI is a national organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. The NAMI San Diego and Imperial Counties chapter was founded in 1978, and is one of more than 600 affiliates nationwide. Jamul Casino was a sponsor of this year’s NAMIWalks event at Liberty Station, helping to bring awareness and reduce stigma around mental illness, and bring hope, recovery, and wellness to those affected by it.

Wounded Warrior Project

Wounded Warrior Project aims to improve the lives of millions of military veterans and their families by providing advocacy and offering programs for mental health, career counseling, and long-term rehabilitative care. In August, Jamul Casino participated in the Wounded Warrior Project’s Carry Forward 5K where team members walked, jogged, and ran to honor and empower wounded warriors.

Jamul Casino presented a check to the organization at this year’s seventh annual Veterans Day luncheon, which paid tribute to 54 members of the Tribe and Casino team who have served in the military.

LGBTQ+ Community

In support of the LGBTQ+ community, Jamul Casino hand-delivered 56 turkeys to The San Diego LGBT Community Center and the Imperial Court de San Diego for their Annual Scott Carlson & Dan Ferbal Thanksgiving Community Dinner. This event offers a hot Thanksgiving Dinner to hundreds of people in need. Jamul Casino was also a major supporter of this year’s San Diego Pride Festival and a title sponsor for the Imperial Court’s 51st San Diego Coronation.

African American Community

This year, Jamul Casino donated $10,000 to Many Shades of Pink, an organization that provides support and resources to African American breast cancer patients. The Casino also hosted a luncheon during Black History Month to honor two local heroic women of color, Dr. Suzanne Afflalo and Wendy Shurelds, who both work to improve healthcare in the African American community.

Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation Completes $515 Million Financial Transaction

Published

On March 29, 2023, the Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation (JIVDC), owner and operator of Jamul Casino and a wholly-owned enterprise of the Jamul Indian Village of California (the Tribe), closed on $515 million of Senior Secured Credit Facilities (the Credit Facilities) with a syndicate of commercial banks led by KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc. The other lenders included Western Alliance Bank, Nevada State Bank, U.S. Bank, PNC Bank, CIT Bank, and Columbia State Bank. Proceeds from the Credit Facilities will be used to refinance existing debt, fund hotel construction, and pay transaction-related fees and expenses.

JIVDC and Tribal Chairwoman Erica M. Pinto said: “We are thankful for the partnership with KeyBanc and appreciate their approach, flexibility, and collaboration. The terms of this transaction will allow us to focus on our long-term financial stability and new projects that will continue to provide benefits for the Tribe.”

“KeyBanc Capital Markets, together with a syndicate of lenders, are dedicated to providing financial solutions required by Tribes and their gaming entities. Jamul Casino’s management team and JIVDC’s effective leadership made this financial goal a reality. We are proud to be part of the continued success of JIVDC, Jamul Casino, and the Tribe as well,” Ben Rechkemmer, Managing Director at KeyBanc, said.

Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP (Procopio) provided legal counsel for the JIVDC, and FSA Investment Group acted as the JIVDC’s financial advisor. Procopio is an AMLaw 200 full-service business and litigation law firm, and FSA Investment Group is a financial advisory and investment firm.

This is the third significant financial transaction the JIVDC has completed in recent years. The Tribe refinanced their property in 2021 and again 2022. The Tribe’s success in completing these transactions is due in part to Jamul Casino’s:

  • Strategic location in a well-populated area with favorable demographics
  • Modern facility with state-of-the-art amenities
  • Impressive player database growth with strong trends
  • Best in-class management team, led by President and General Manager, Mary Cheeks.

“It’s very rewarding to see Jamul Casino’s success recognized by this team of lenders. It speaks to the vision of our Tribal Board, the Property leadership team, the dedication of our staff, and the loyalty of our guests. This comes at an exceptional time as we begin building a beautiful new hotel connected to the Casino,” Ms. Cheeks said.

JIVDC is adding to its property by developing a new 16-story hotel, which will feature 200 rooms, including 52 suites, a rooftop pool and jetted hot tub, a spa and salon, a fitness center, a restaurant and lobby bar, and a banquet room. The hotel is being built to achieve AAA’s Four Diamond designation.
