Hawks Talon Protects Top 10 Player in Points Per Game and Versatile Player from Expansion Draft

Hawks Talon GC, the official NBA 2K League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, today announced that they have protected Caesar Martinez (CEEZ) and Michael Swanegan (SWANN) from the upcoming NBA 2K League Expansion Draft, set to take place on Nov. 17. This offseason, each of the 23 teams that competed in 2021 must protect at least two and up to three players who were on its roster at the end of the 2021 season from selection in the expansion draft. All protected players are ineligible to be selected in the expansion draft.

“With the approaching expansion draft, I wanted to be confident that our team maintained a necessary drive to win,” said Hawks Talon GC Director of Esports Wesley Acuff. “CEEZ and SWANN brought invaluable leadership and a hunger to win to our franchise last season, and we look forward to building around them this offseason.”

CEEZ, Hawks Talon’s 2021 first-round draft pick, returns to Hawks Talon GC after finishing the 2021 regular season ranked eighth in average points per game (27.0). In addition, he ranked 21st in the league with 7.5 assists per game while playing primarily as the team’s point guard. SWANN, Hawks Talon’s 2021 third-round draft pick, will return next season after playing multiple roles and compiling season averages of 6.4 points, 1.2 steals and 0.9 rebounds per game.

During the expansion draft, held on Nov. 17, DUX Gaming’s team will select two or three players to become the team’s first players. During the month following the expansion draft, each of the 23 teams that competed in 2021 will have the opportunity to retain additional players. Teams will retain players by forfeiting draft picks in the 2022 Draft. Subject to NBA 2K League rules and satisfaction of all applicable requirements, all players who are not retained will be automatically eligible for the 2022 Draft.

As a result of retaining two players, Hawks Talon will have their original first-round, second-round, third-round and fourth-round draft picks in the upcoming 2022 NBA 2K League Draft. If Hawks Talon does not have a player selected in the expansion draft, Hawks Talon can retain a first additional player by forfeiting a third-round draft pick and can retain a second additional player by forfeiting a second-round draft pick.

Be #GiftSmart: Scratch the Idea of Gifting Scratch & Win Tickets to Kids

BCLC reminds adults to gift responsibly this holiday season

With the holiday season in full swing, BCLC is reminding British Columbians to gift responsibly and scratch lottery products from their shopping lists for kids.

“Scratch & Win tickets can make great stocking stuffers for the adults in your life, but they’re not for kids,” said Ryan McCarthy, BCLC’s Director of Player Health. “The research shows that children who have early encounters with gambling are four times more likely to develop riskier gambling behaviour as they grow up. While people are out shopping for those last-minute gifts, BCLC wants adults to be aware of the potential risks associated with gifting lottery products to children and to consider safer alternatives.”

While Scratch & Win tickets are among the most common ways kids can be introduced to gambling, children are increasingly exposed to various online forms, such as gambling streams.

“With the convergence of gaming and gambling, youth are becoming more exposed to gambling content in online spaces like streaming sites, where creators are able to live-stream their own gambling, usually while playing online slots and instant games,” said Dr. Luke Clark, Director for Gambling Research at UBC. “Our research at the UBC Centre for Gambling shows that a higher frequency of watching online gambling streams is associated with a more positive attitude towards gambling and a high intention to gamble in the future.”

In B.C., it is illegal to sell lottery products to anyone under the age of 19 and BCLC encourages adults to have conversations with the kids in their lives about the risks associated with gambling.

“Open and honest conversations are crucial when it comes to navigating childhood exposure to gambling,” said McCarthy, who shared the following tips to adults:

  • Monitor for gambling-related lifestyle changes. For example, developing a positive attitude towards gambling or a preoccupation with video games or streaming sites.
  • Be a positive role model. Exhibit safer gambling behaviour and talk about the risks.
  • Limit exposure. Monitor kids’ online activities and discourage engagement with gambling content. Explain how gambling is based on chance.
